Employment in Japan is not as tricky as it may seem. Here, Akira Management provides you with the necessary information you need to know when considering employment in Japan.

Professional Visa

A work visa allows you to live and work full-time in Japan in your chosen professional field. It is legally required should you plan to be an employee of a Japanese company or Japan-based company.

Language Requirements: Level of N1 or N2

Career Industry: Professor, Researcher, Artist, Lecturer, Religious Activities, Engineer, Reporter, Internal Transferee, Business Manager, Nursing, Law/Accounting Services, Skilled Labour, Medical Services, Technical Internship

Period of Stay: 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, 4 months or 3 months

Specified Skilled Visa (SSV1)

This visa is applicable as a status of residence for foreign nationals who work in fields that require specific skills in technical or specified skills industries. Individuals must be able to begin immediate work without receiving any particular training. Specified skills and Japanese proficiency will be confirmed by a unified test conducted by Japan.

Language Requirements: Level of N4 and above

Career Industry: Nursing Care, Machine Parts & Tooling Industries, Hotel & Hospitality, Industrial Machinery Industry, Food Service Industry, Electric, Electronics & Information Industries, Manufacture of Food & Beverage, Construction Industry, Building Cleaning Management, Shipbuilding & Ship Machinery Industry, Agriculture, Automobile Repair & Maintenance, Fishery & Aquaculture, Aviation Industry

Period of Stay: Renewed every 1 year, 6 months or 4 months, up to 5 years in total

Permanent Residence Visa

The permanent residence visa is applicable for expats who have been living in Japan for a considerable amount of time and have plans to remain in the country for the long-term, or in some cases, make it their permanent home. A Permanent Residency will ease one’s process when living in Japan, as you no longer have to constantly renew or extend your visa.

Eligibility Requirements:

● If you are the spouse of a Japanese citizen or permanent resident: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after one year of residence in Japan, but you must have been married for at least three years.
● If you are the child of a Japanese citizen or permanent resident: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after one year of residence in Japan.
● If you have made a contribution to Japan: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after five years of residence in Japan
● If you have had any other type of visa (other than the ones mentioned above), you can apply for Permanent Residency in Japan only after ten years of continuous residence. During this time, you must have had a Japan Work Visa for at least five consecutive years.
