Working in Japan information (工作情報)
A work visa allows you to live and work full-time in Japan in your chosen professional field.
It is legally required should you plan to be an employee of a Japanese company or Japan-based company.
Period of stay
- Highly skilled professional: 5 years
- Dependent Spouse and children of highly skilled foreign professional (Note): 5 years, 3 years or 1year
- Highly skilled foreign professional’s spouse who intend to work in Japan: 5 years, 3 years or 1 year
- Parents of highly skilled foreign professional or his/her spouses who intend to take care of a grandchild/grandchildren (a child/children of highly skilled foreign professional) under the age of seven or take care of a pregnant highly skilled foreign professional or their spouse: 1 year or 6 months
- House servants of highly skilled foreign professional: 1 year
This visa is applicable as a status of residence for foreign nationals who work in fields that require specific skills in technical or specified skills industries.
Individuals must be able to begin immediate work without receiving any particular training.
Specified skills and Japanese proficiency will be confirmed by a unified test conducted by Japan.
In order to work under a Specified Skilled Worker (i) status of residence, you need to pass a Japanese language test and a skills proficiency test. (You do not need to pass these tests if you have satisfactorily completed Technical Intern Training (ii). However, to work in a different field, you need to pass a skills proficiency test in the field in which you wish to work.) Taking these tests costs money.
The permanent residence visa is applicable for expats who have been living in Japan for a considerable amount of time and have plans to remain in the country for the long-term, or in some cases, make it their permanent home. A Permanent Residency will ease one’s process when living in Japan, as you no longer have to constantly renew or extend your visa.
Who is Eligible for Japan Permanent Residency?
You can apply for Japan Permanent Residency if you fulfill the following requirements:
- You have been living in Japan for a sufficient period of time.
- The required time changes depending on the residency status you have held:As the holder of a Highly Skilled Professional Visa:
- Three years if you reached between 70-80 points on the Point Evaluation Mechanism
- One year if you reached over 80 points on the Point Evaluation Mechanism
- If you are the spouse of a Japanese citizen or permanent resident: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after one year of residence in Japan, but you must have been married for at least three years
- If you are the child of a Japanese citizen or permanent resident: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after one year of residence in Japan
- If you have made a contribution to Japan: You can receive Japan Permanent Residency after five years of residence in Japan
- If you had any other type of visa (other than the ones mentioned above), you can apply for Permanent Residency in Japan only after ten years of continuous residence. During this time, you must have had a Japan Work Visa for at least five consecutive years.
- You display good conduct. This means you must have abided by Japanese laws and have not been subject to social criticism during your residence in Japan.
- You can support yourself financially. You do not depend on someone else for financial resources, and you can have a stable life in Japan.
- There is no specific annual salary required to have, but generally, it should not be less than 3 million per year. The requirements are higher if you have dependents.
- You have paid Income Tax and other contributions in Japan. If you have not paid taxes, paid less then the required amount, or you cannot present Tax Certificates, your application can be rejected.
- You must have a Guarantor who is a Japanese citizen or Permanent Resident. Your Guarantor has to sign a Letter of Guarantee and take on a moral obligation (not legal) in regard to you.
